Basic Assumptions
English language, like other school subjects should instill in the learner a sound value system based on the following foundations.

  1. Faith in Allah
  2. Pride in the Islamic Culture
  3. Moderation and harmony between our authentic heritage and modernity.

Rationale for the Teaching of English

  1. English is the lingua franca of the world and hence the means of understanding and cooparation among countries and peoples .
  2. English is a necessary tool for economic, social, cultural and technological development.
  3. A high – level mastery of English is necessary to acquire   knowledge , persue higher education, do research, utilize recent advances in technology, possess an international outreach and excel in work.

General Goals
After twelve years of learning English at Al-Iman School, students are expected to acquire the following.

  1. Ability to produce and comprehend the English sound system as realized in segments, syllables , words, phrases and sentences, communicate inlelligibly and rather fluently in English with native and near - native speakers of the lauguage, using native and  near –native  pronunciation and understand English spoken at normel speed in different real-life situations.
  2. Ability to communicate intelligibly using a variety of language structures and vocabulary to express notions and functions relevant to everyday life situations; such as: greetings; leave-taking; polite formulas and expressions; asking and answering questions (about oneself, others, age, price, weight, measurement, time, place, quantity, frequency, distance etc), introductions; accepting and declining offers and invitations, identification, requesting, asking for permission; agreeing and disagreeing,  expressing likes, dislikes wishes and preferences; making suggestions, apologizing, complaining, etc.
  3. Ability to read and understand simplified as well authentic English of a general nature and / or technical language within a vocabulary between 1000 and 1500 words for the elementary stage (Grades, 1-6), between 2000 and 2500 words for the preparatory  stage (Grades 7-9) and between 2000 and 2500 words for the secondary stage (Grades 10-12); read and identity the main ideas from newspapers, magazine articles, brochures, catalogues, and instruction manuals; acquire the skill of reading silently at a reasonable speed; get specific information from reading passages and other sources . 
  4.  Ability to write legibly, correctly and neatly; to use English punctuation system correctly; to spell correctly the vocabulary contatined in the assigned courebooks, to write properly structured sentences; to write a logical, well – structured paragraph; to retell a story in writing, write a complete dialogue; write a short letter for some practical purposes; describe how a machine functions; fill in forms; extract information from maps, graphs, and diagrams and use it in written form.
  5. Translate from Arabic into English and vice versa.
  6. Acquire a positive attitude towards English and realize its importance as a world language and as a means of professional development of the individual.
